A security analyst from Liberia, Prosper Nii Nortey Addo, says care must be taken to prevent manufacturers of small arms from hiding under the cover of darkness.
According to him, small arms is causing a lot of problem in the country and any attempt in bring sanity into the system should be encouraged.
Mr. Nortey Addo was reacting to a directive given by the Ashanti regional police commander to residents in Ashanti region to hand over to the police, all unauthorized weapons in their possession, or risk being treated as suspected armed robbers.
Speaking to Joy News Wednesday, Mr. Nortey Addo noted that the Ashanti regional police commander should be guided by the ECOWAS convention on small arms in order to control the manufacturers of small arms and ensure that the action taken does not drive them underground.
He therefore called for manufacturers of small arms to be registered so as to manage their presence in the country, insisting that the ministry of interior takes a concerted approach to deal with the root cause of the problem.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye gave the directive to residents in Ashanti region in an attempt to rid the region of unauthorized weapons.
The regional police commander believes there is an increase in weapon possession in the area.
In his first meeting with journalists, the new regional police commander announced a thousand Ghana Cedis reward for anybody, who leads the police to retrieve an AK 47.
DCOP Kofi Boakye also noted that he will set up regional anti robbery task force to deal with only robbery cases to reduce crime in the region.
