The sanitation and waste disposal situation is set to worsen in the capital after the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant shuts down, Monday.

The shut down follows a delay in the release of funds to the plant by government.

The plant treats and recycles waste generated in Accra and its environs.

Officials at the facility say they have been forced to shut down the plant because the Local Government Ministry has for the past two years failed to fulfill its part of an agreement with the company.

Business Development Manager at the Accra Compost Plant Michael Tuwor has described the situation as critical.

He told Joy News' Francis Abban they have stopped all waste disposal companies from dumping waste at the plant until the situation normalises.

He also added that over 100 workers have been asked to stay at home.

Describing the situation as "unbearable", Michael Tuwor stated that several attempts by his outfit to get funding from the Local Government Ministry have proven futile.

According to him, his outfit for over a year ran the compost plant with their own funds but that has proven to be unsustainable.

They are now waiting for funding to be made available before any activity will continue at the plant site.

The situation will undoubtedly affect an already precarious situation in terms of waste disposal in the country.

The Local Government ministry is yet to react to the issue.
