A 50 year old farmer, who ambushed four teenage boys in his sugar cane farm, and allegedly shot and killed one of them, has been arrested by the Kumasi police. The suspect, Kwasi Mensah, who resides at Ayigya, a suburb of Kumasi killed Robert Barnes, an 18 year old Junior high school graduate and wounded three others in the process is being interrogated by the police. Those who survived the gunshots but sustained various degrees of injuries have been treated and discharged from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). The body of the deceased, who graduated from the Amankwatia Junior High School in Kumasi in April this year, has been deposited at KATH for autopsy. Briefing newsmen after the incident, the District Police Commander in charge of the Zongo Police Station, ASP Gabriel Magamsa said around 4:30 p.m. on June 27, 2008, the deceased and his three friends went to ease themselves in the said sugarcane farm. He said at that time, the suspect was keeping surveillance in the farm and suspecting that the boys were there to steal some of his products, shot at Robert Barnes, hitting him on the fore head, causing him to bleed profusely. He said the suspect fired other shots, which hit another boy, Anim Boateng at the back of the head. They were rushed to the KATH, but Robert was pronounced dead on arrival, while Anim was treated and discharged. He said moments after attacking the boys with his gun, the suspect fled the crime scene, but police mounted a search for him. The District Commander said in the course of the search, one single barrel gun was retrieved from his room. He said the police also retrieved 43 live AAA cartridges; one used cartridge and two locally manufactured guns. ASP Magamsa said the suspect was later arrested by residents of Atiwa near Boankra in the Ejisu Juabeng District where he had sought refuge, and handed him over to the police. The police added that the suspect has since been remanded in police custody to assist in their investigations, assuring that, he would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were completed.
