The debate in Parliament over a more stringent enforcement of the Assets Declaration Law reached its peak on Wednesday with opinions varied on the best way forward.
While some members pushed for a more rigorous enforcement of assets disclosure as a way of curbing corruption in the country, others argued any pursuit in that direction might turn out to be a mirage if certain factors are not taken into consideration.
If reviewed, public officers would be required to declare their assets before and after serving public office.
Some of the proponents of the idea argued that the country is likely to reap some positive development dividend and improved government if it is able to churn out an assets disclosure regime that really works.
Minority spokesperson on Communications and MP for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrissu, in a motion said the current law is weak and called for a need to strengthen it.
“We need to strengthen our mechanism for accountability of our public officers,” he opined.
Mr Iddrissu also proposed including assets declaration by certain close family relations as many a politician would opt to “hide behind children and spouses” to get their way though.
Meanwhile some analysts have argued that creating an assets declaration regime would be a total hoax in as much as such declarations are not made public.
