The Volta Regional police commander DCOP Bernard Guyiri Dery, says the Police Service is capable of handling any security problems that might arise during this year’s elections.
He therefore appealed to politicians in the region not to engage the services of “machomen” before, during and after the election but call on the Police for assistance if the need arises.
Mr. Dery was addressing the passing-out parade of the Volta Region Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) of the Police Service in Ho.
The RDF made up of one senior officer, one inspector and 96 other ranks is under the command of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Dominic Agbozo.
They underwent a one-week intensive training in physical training, defensive skills, crowd control and appropriate use of equipment.
Their functions include protection of demonstrators and dignitaries during functions and general prevention of crime and disorder.
He urged the Force members not to undermine the mainstream Police but support it to achieve their common goals.
He also appealed to them to live above reproach and respect the dignity and rights of the people.
“Constitutional democracy goes with the rule of law which also goes with democratic policing, police of the people, for the people and by the people,” Mr Dery said.
He said the RDF was borne out of an agreement between the Ghanaian and French governments which includes logistical support but was not set up by the government because of the 2008 elections.
A demonstration of handling of peaceful and violent demonstrations was performed by members of the RDF and also equipment for handling such demonstrations were displayed.Source: GNA
