Members of the National Election Security Task Force are considering arming the police and other security personnel at the various polling stations in the upcoming general elections.
The proposal is part of measures to ward off miscreants and ensure peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections in December.
The task force which is chaired by the Inspector General of Police, Patrick Acheampong will in September outdoor a comprehensive security programme for the December polls.
In an interview with Joy news, DSP Kwesi Ofori, Head of Police Public Relations, said the security task force would ensure absolute security coverage in the upcoming polls.
"The task force is to create a general security atmosphere that will enable voters to come out and vote according to their conscience.”
He maintained the police will protect the ballot boxes, and all other stakeholders, in order to create a conducive atmosphere for people to come out and vote.
Personnel at the Immigration, Fire, and Prison services who will be deployed during the elections are to undergo training for effective policing of ballots.
