Engen Ghana Limited is promoting science and mathematics education among second cycle students across the country.

The company which is affiliated to South African-based multi-national oil company, Engen Petroleum, has earmarked about 16 second-cycle schools in five regions to receive research materials.

Manager for Safety, Environment and Quality, Alfred Buahing, said this after presenting Science Period Table worth, 2,000 Ghana cedis and a cash amount to the Otumfuo Education Fund.

“Research and development can make Ghana better and it takes students who will be interested in doing scientific research in getting solutions to our numerous challenges that we are [interested] in today. Engen wants to sponsor and motivate students who do Maths and science and do it well”.

Engen Ghana Limited over the years has been concentrating on education, safety, environment and community outreach as part of its corporate social responsibility programmes aimed at uplifting people economically and socially in its catchment area.

It is the oil firm’s third corporate responsibility program for this year after it sponsored free cleft surgery for children, an initiative by the Smile Ghana Missions.

Engen Ghana has paid health insurance premium to over 100 people across the country, while supplying 20,000 free exercise books to basic schools in Ashanti and Eastern Regions.

Mr. Buahing told Nhyira Fm the company believes science and mathematics hold the key to addressing Ghana’s development challenges.

“Very soon you will see us on board of the Ghana Mathematics and Science Quiz because it is our goal that we would be able to motivate students to be practical with their Maths and Science.”

Engen’s Environmental and Product Quality projects include the sale of premium clean intelligent fuels and lubricants at no cost to the consumer. This means Engen sells fuels highly activated with environmental friendly additives which reduced ozone layer depletion at lower prices unlike what the company’s competitors charge for similar products. 

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Otumfuo Education Fund, Nana Brefo Boateng has commended Engen Ghana for taking the lead in promotion of science and mathematics in the country.

He said such a move will go a long way to provide a better alternative in helping solve the myriad of challenges facing the country.
