The commander of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service, has appealed to the Drivers, Vehicle and Licensing Authority, to do thorough checks on commercial vehicles before certifying them as road worthy.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Julius Avorga, observed that most of the vehicles especially the 410 and 207 Benz buses are modified cargo trucks, hence the need for meticulous checks on their road worthiness to avert motor accidents.
ACP Avorga, was speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, during the inauguration of 25 air-conditioned buses of the Accra, Ho, Amedzorpe, Shia, Kpetoe, Air-Condition Buses Association branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Accra, for the transportation of people to the Volta Region.
He lauded the union for introducing the new buses, which he said was part of a national agenda to phase out the old fleet of buses.
Mr Avorga said as part of the programme, government was importing over 200 buses to augment the services of the Metro Mass Transport service.
Mr Stephen Okudzeto, Chairman of the branch said the buses were purchased by the GPRTU, in collaboration with organisations such as Priceline Consult, Stanbic Bank, Amalgamated Bank, Unique Trust Financial Services.
He noted that with the support of government and other stakeholders in the transport industry, members of the local GPRTU union would make their services sustainable in the Region.
Mr Okudzeto asked drivers of the new buses to shun indiscipline on the roads, longer hours of driving, over-speeding and unnecessary overtaking, which often cause accidents.
"Be polite and cautious to passengers, because without the passengers we shall be out of business," he said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Edem Kuadey, in charge of the Ministries Police Station, MTTU, asked the drivers to maintain the buses regularly and dress neatly to enhance their services.Source: GNA
