After almost two years of electing its flag-bearer, the largest opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Saturday launched its manifesto at the Round Pavilion, Trade Fair Centre, in Accra amidst funfair.
Party supporters and loyalists who thronged the auditorium were clad in party colours. They chanted and danced to well-composed party tunes. The launch was also graced by representatives of other political parties including Dan Lartey, presidential candidate of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and Kofi Wayo, founder of the National Renaissance Party (NRP).
Prior to the launch of the party’s manifesto by the presidential candidate, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the gathering was addressed by many party leaders including Haruna Idrisu, National Youth Organiser, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, a former running mate aspirant, Lee Ocran, Chairman of Manifesto Committee, Hannah Tetteh, Director of Communications, Alhaji Mahamudu Mumuni, former vice presidential candidate, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman, Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader and John Mahama, vice presidential candidate.
However, it was the party founder, Flt. Lit. Jerry John Rawlings, who stole the show to climax the historic end of the manifesto launch.
Even though Mr. Rawlings was not billed to address the function, he unexpectedly sprung onto the dais, immediately after Prof. Atta Mills had finished giving his speech, he raised Prof. Mills’ hand up to indicate his obvious choice for the presidential slot and to also canvass support for the flag-bearer. His gesture was greeted with wild cheers and approval from the party members.
“We have heard and I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge what a great man he is,” Mr. Rawlings exalted Prof. Mills.
Mr. Rawlings said the manifesto is the aspiration of the whole nation and reminded party supporters on the need to translate it into reality by doing what is possible for the party to come back to power.
“My brothers and sisters, what you have to bear in mind is that we have to fight for it before these papers [manifesto] can become real. Human beings must be alive in order to give it meaning.”
The former President turned biblical and professed his believe in Christianity and preached to the audience the essence and benefit of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, who he said was perceived as a “bad and unholy man."
“It was after his crucifixion that people realized what a holy great man He was,” he noted.
