A 38-year-old man, who claimed to be a construction worker in Kuwait, has been arrested in Takoradi for allegedly trafficking young Ghanaian women to engage in prostitution.
Oscar Kumi is said to have collected various sums of money from the unsuspecting ladies, under the pretext of assisting them to travel to Kuwait for employment.
One of his victims who claimed to have paid GH¢7,600 for the trip, returned home recently to expose Kumi to security officers.
Kumi, who was arrested on Tuesday, is in police custody, assisting in investigations.
The Bibiani District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis K. Ennor, told our reporter that since April, when the police had information about Kumi’s activities, they placed a surveillance on him.
He explained that Kumi, who had foreign sponsors, had been recruiting young women from Ghana and dumping them in Kuwait for them to be arrested and forced into prostitution.
Kumi, he said had been collecting what he termed as processing fees, from unsuspecting victims.
“A lot of people have been deceived by being sent to Korea to work but later, found themselves in Kuwait as if on transit. We want people who have fallen prey to come forward. He has taken huge amounts of money for the same purpose,” he said.
