The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided that the incumbent Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu, be allowed to run for re-election on the party’s ticket.
Confusion erupted in the constituency after the party’s national executive allegedly asked the incumbent MP to step down and allow the former MP, Mohammed Mumuni, to run on the party’s ticket.
Alhaji Mumuni, who has been the party’s Member of Parliament for the area since 2006, relinquished his seat when he partnered Prof. Evans Atta Mills in the 2004 presidential race.
The Deputy Communication Director of the NDC, Seth Ofori, told Joy News the issue has been resolved and Alhaji Imoro Yakubu has been asked to file his nomination papers with the Electoral Commission.
“We have some communication difficulties and we would like to leave it there. We have managed to resolve the issue and we are very firm as to who would represent the NDC.”
Before this development, Daily Graphic reported that supporters of Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu protested against the alleged decision of party’s leadership.
Consequently, they advocated for the incumbent MP to stand as an independent candidate.
The Kumbungu Constituency Secretary of the NDC, Mr Iddrisu Ibrahim, told the paper that a letter signed by the party's General Secretary reportedly stated that Alhaji Mumuni, a former vice-presidential candidate in the 2004 general election, should stand on the ticket of the NDC.
