Students of the Central University College (CUC) would from this academic year undertake community service to help the less privileged. The students under the programme would help academically less endowed pupils of communities to do their homework as well as impart skills to people living in disadvantaged communities. Professor Victor Yaw Gadzekpo, President of the CUC announced this on Saturday at the University’s Seventh Congregation at Miosto near Prampram. The University graduated 576 students out of which 27 were from the School of Theology and Missions, while 549 graduated from the School of Business Management and Administration. Prof Gadzekpo noted that every student entering into the university would be required to do community service before graduating. He said the service would enable the students to develop love for their country as well as prepare them for service as it would inculcate good and responsible citizenship into them. He stated that the University was ready to inculcate good moral values into the students as good education must not only provide academic knowledge but also good morals. The CUC President also announced that the university would receive the charter to become a full fledge university within this 2008/2009 academic year. Prof Gadzekpo said CUC has graduated 3,000 students out of which 52 percent were women and 48 percent men over the past 10 years that the institution has been in existence. On the university’s infrastructure, the CUC President said the first phase of the construction of its permanent campus at Miosto has been completed. He stated that a two unit staff bungalow, three 2-storey lecture halls and a four-storey science laboratory block in addition to hostel, offices and a 400 seating capacity library have been completed. Rev Mensa Otabil, Chancellor of CUC recounted how the university begun and encouraged students to focus on achieving their dreams by starting small. Rev Otabil who is the Founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) said the university was committed towards building disciplined students, noting that, students must use their freedom judiciously instead of indulging in immoral activities, which university students often fall victims to. Ms Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Chairperson of CUC’s Board of Regents urged the students not to perceive education as a luxury but rather a necessity to succeed in the competitive world. Ms Aryee who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines entreated the students to equip themselves with faith, fidelity, frugality and flexibility to succeed in life. She said people must recognize that success comes from personal effort, good character, being circumspect and adapting easily to change socially, mentally, spiritually and economically. Outstanding students were awarded, with Mrs Elizabeth Apori-Obeng receiving four awards including the overall best student while Loretta Sylvia Tetteh also received three awards. Source: GNA
