A nine year old boy is reported dead after he accidentally shot himself, Wednesday evening.
The incident happened at Green Container in Ofankor, in the Ga West Municipality of Accra.
Reports say the gun belonged to the father of the deceased and was kept under a pillow of a bed in a grocery store owned by the boy’s parents.
Mother of the deceased Hagar Amponsah, told Joy News' Beatrice Adu she is distraught. She had only two months ago given birth to her third child.
According to her, the son wanted to sleep so she asked him to go and sleep in the store.
She said minutes after he entered, she heard the reports of gunshot and decided to go and find out what was happening.
It was then that she saw the lifeless body of her son with blood oozing from his head.
She said she fainted and did not know what happened afterwards.
She said the gun belonged to her husband, a carpenter who is now in police custody.
According to her, the husband said their store had been attacked by armed robbers on four occasions but on the fourth attack, one of the robbers left behind a gun after they were chased by police personnel.
She said the husband had been keeping the gun for well over a year until Wednesday's disaster.
Chief Superintendent Paul Kuntomah with the Greater Accra Police Crime Officer told Joy News they are holding the father of the deceased for possessing a gun without authority.
He would possibly be charged with illegal possession of fire arm.
He said the corpse of the boy had been sent to the Korle Bu hospital morgue.
