A hand-dug well fixed with pump constructed by Africare Fund and MARS, corporate Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), has been inaugurated at Takyikrom, a cocoa farming community near Asankragwa in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region.
Mr Alberto Takyi, Wassa Amenfi West District Chief Executive, said with the construction of the well, the problem of water-borne diseases and water shortage would be a thing of the past.
He appealed to parents to send their children to school so that they could enjoy the Capitation Grant introduced by the government.
Mr Travis Adkins, African Country Representative of Africare, said the NGO had invested 25,000 dollars in community projects in the Wassa Amenfi West District.
He said the communities include Bakorore, Wiredukrom, Takyikrom and Jantuakrom.
Mr Adkins said presently his organization was focusing on providing potable water, sanitation and health facilities in rural communities and may consider other interventions as well.
Nana Kwaku Nterful I, Chief of Tekyikrom, thanked the NGO for constructing the well for the community.
He appealed to the government to take over the only private school in the village and build a clinic to serve the surrounding communities.
Mr Robert Obiri Yeboah, Executive Director of Codesult Network, an NGO based in the district which partnered Africare in carrying out the construction, said its intervention areas included elimination of child labour, building the capacities of the local people and ensuring responsible parenting.
