Out of soccer for nearly a decade and in debt to the tune of a reported 200,000 euros ($254,000 dollars), Brehme has fallen on hard times since scoring the World Cup-winning goal for West Germany in 1990.
Former German World Cup hero Andreas Brehme's career is in the toilet, so he might as well clean one.
Out of soccer for nearly a decade and in debt to the tune of a reported 200,000 euros ($254,000 dollars), Brehme has been offered a job cleaning toilets by Oliver Straube, who played under Brehme at SpVgg Unterhaching and currently owns a bathroom maintenance company.
"We are ready to take Andreas," Straube told German newspaper Deutsche Welle.
"He will learn that what really counts is proper work and real life. It would help him improve his image. To me, that’s help."
It’s a stunning fall from grace for Brehme, who scored the World Cup-winning goal for West Germany in the 1990 final against Argentina and played left back for top-level teams like Bayern Munich and Inter Milan before transitioning to a coaching career.
But he may be spared having to add toilet cleaner to his resume thanks to German legend Franz Beckhenbauer, who called on the proud soccer nation to rally behind its fallen hero.
“We have a responsibility to help Andreas Berhme. He gave a lot to German soccer, he gave us a [World Cup] title. Now it’s time for German soccer to do something for him.”
Berhme’s financial troubles are the rule rather than the exception according to Germany’s players' union, which released a report claiming that three out of four former players are unable to earn a living outside of soccer once their careers on the pitch end.
