Operations at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) are likely to be grounded, following gross misunderstandings between the National Union of Harbour Employees on one hand and Mr. Ben Owusu Mensah, Director General of GPHA on another.
The union workers are accusing the Director General of taking arbitrary decisions which are inimical to their interest.
Addressing a press conference in Tema, James Jebuni, General Secretary of National Union of Harbour Employees cited the splitting of Golden Gate Services Limited (GGSL), and awarding half of its stevedoring allocation to Cargo Systems company Limited (CSCL).
The split in the allocation takes effect from 1st January, 2009.
According to Mr. Jebuni, the Director General “threw due process to the dogs,” alleging, the new company, CSCL owned by one Mr. Osei Sarfo Bonsu did not have the requisite equipments to stevedore at the ports, but has been given license to operate.
Mr. Sarfo Bonsu was a share holder in GGSL but had to break away due to a protracted misunderstanding with majority shareholder, Mr. Bennet Aboagye.
The General Secretary expressed fears that almost half of the workers of GGSL will be retrenched as a result of the split and has called on President Mills to intervene without delay to save the workers undue financial crisis.
Whilst welcoming President Mills’ policy to separate the regulatory and commercial functions of the GPHA, Mr. Jebuni appealed for the contract of Meridian Ports Services Limited to be revisited which according to him enjoys more privileges than it deserves.
He also accused the Director General of “witch-hunting GGSL as evidenced in his suspension of the company’s stevedoring licence based on lies in September, 2007" and called on Mills’ administration to dispense with his services.
