The Upper West Regional Director of Education, Mr Cletus Paaga says the utterances of some teachers of second cycle schools were some of the root causes of indiscipline and riotous behaviour among students of such institutions. "Unguarded comments like ‘it is only in this school that such bad meals are prepared for students to eat’ is a recipe for rioting by students." Mr Paaga was speaking at the seventh joint annual conference of the Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) form the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions( the tree Northern Regions), at Wa. The Conference was organised on the theme: "the impact of education on the three northern regions, 50 years after independence". He observed that the management of senior secondary schools, especially those with boarding facilities was difficult citing indiscipline, late release of feeding grants and poor teacher-student relationship as some of the problems schools faced. Mr Paaga however, urged teachers collaborate with parents to solve these problems to enhance teaching and learning. Mr Paaga asked CHASS members to inform the Headquarters of Ghana Education Service through district directors of education lapses that they might detect in the implementation of the new salary structure that had been approved for teachers. Mr Moses Donneyong, Upper West Regional Chairman of CHASS, said their annual meetings had the overriding objective of discussing common problems that were militating against education in the three regions, especially the perennial problem of late release of feeding grants for boarding schools.
