The newly appointed Chairman of the Black Stars Management Team, George Afriyie has told JOY Sports that it will be unrealistic to expect the senior national football team to win the 2015 Nations Cup to be hosted in Equatorial Guinea.
Speaking on the JOY Sports Link on Saturday, Mr Afriyie said the lack of support from Ghanaians towards the Black Stars makes it almost impossible to win a tournament which starts in about two months.
“If I look at the team-don’t forget I have been with the team for a while now- but if you look at the team I don’t think they are enjoying a lot of support at the moment. And to win a tournament you need the support of the entire nation. So for me winning the 2015 Nations Cup in unrealistic.”
Mr. Afriyie was however quick to add that the team will do all it can within the short period in an attempt for Ghana to win the AFCON 2015 tournament.
“This is not to say we are going into a competition and we are not interested in the cup because people would say then why are you going to participate anyway? During the Libya 1982 tournament, many people Ghana were not expecting Ghana to participate because of the political tension at the time but President Rawlings made a decision to let Ghana participate in the competition and we ended up winning it so it is possible that we can win the AFCON 2015 in Equatorial Guinea”.
George Afriyie is taking over from GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi who stepped down as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee last Thursday.
Prior to his appointment, George Afriyie was the Chairman of the Black Satellites Management Committee and even though his new portfolio comes with enormous pressure, he believes he has what it takes to deliver.
“I believe in planning and we should not be doing things on an ad-hoc basis. The Germans did not just wake up to win the World Cup; they planned it," he said.
