The Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, (formerly Accra Sports Stadium) will not have any athletic.
The is to enable it meet the FIFA and CAF requirement of a minimum seating capacity of 40,000 for the hosting of the opening and closing ceremonies of their tournaments.
All the other stadia earmarked to host matches of the African Football Tournament next year have however been provided with athletic ovals and shall be fitted with tartan tracks.
Papa Owusu-Ankomah, Minister of Education, Science and Sports, told Parliament on Friday in order to meet this requirement at the Ohene Djan Stadium, the tartan tracks had to be removed and the stands expanded and brought nearer the playing field.
He was responding to a question on why no provision had been made for athletic ovals in the rehabilitation works on the Ohene Djan, Baba Yara and the two new stadia at Sekondi-Takoradi and Tamale.
