There are conflicting explanations as to the actual cause of the acute water shortage that has hit parts of the capital, Accra.
Some parts of Accra have gone without water for some five days now.
The Minister for Water Resources Works and Housing told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah a faulty pump is to blame for the water shortage.
Mr. Albert Abongo said one of the pumps at the Weija Water Works which had been down for the past one month had caused some irregularities in the production of water.
He said a new pump had been procured and would arrive within the next one or two months.
“These are big pumps so you don’t normally buy them and keep as spare.”
Mr. Bongo stressed if that pump is installed enough water would be pumped to serve every part of the capital and reduce the water problems facing residents.
The Public Relations Officer of Aqua Vitens Rand, managers of the Ghana Water Company, however gave a different explanation to the cause of the water shortage.
Mr. Stanley Martey said some expansion work at Sakaman in Acrra, necessitated a shutting down of the water treatment plant at Weija.
He said when the company was laying pipes and were about to restart the plant, they experienced power outage.
According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana quickly moved in to rectify the problem and within five hours production started again.
Unfortunately new set of challenges he said were encountered which made them shut down the plant once again.
As at 3 a.m. on Friday, production had started again. Mr. Martey was optimistic by midday Friday taps in most parts of Accra will run.
