Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking, a study by an award-winning cancer expert, Dr. Vini Khurana has concluded.
He says people should avoid using them if possible and urged government and the mobile phone industry to take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.
In an interview with peacefmonline, the customer Relations Executive of “I 2” Limited, main distributors of Nokia phones in Ghana, Ms. Faith, admitted that, mobiles phones can save lives in emergencies, but added that "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence which links mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours. This, she said, will "definitively be proven" in the next decade.
Ms. Faith added that it is advisable for people to stop using several phones or a phone which uses two chips at the same time - because scientists have proven that radiation from two phones made an egg cook during an experiment –, giving reason why Nokia has not produced phones that uses two chips.
Ms Faith was speaking in reaction to peacefmonline’s follow up on a warning that says phones should not be answered while on charge.
The warning was also based on an incident where someone who received phone call whilst it was on charge; electricity flowed into the phone and he was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud.
According to the story, his family rushed into the room only to find him unconscious, with weak heartbeats and burnt fingers.
He was then rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. This has proven that even though a cell phone is a useful modern invention, however, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.
In a related development, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service has issued a press warning drivers to desist from using their mobile phones whiles driving.
