President John Evans Atta Mills and officials of telecoms giant Vodafone Plc have met in London over government's review of the deal which saw the transfer of 70% Ghana Telecom to the British company.On the last day of his visit to the UK, President Mills is said to have held closed-door discussions with executives of the telecoms company on the planned review of the contract agreement between the two parties – Vodafone Plc and the Government of Ghana.The president visited the UK at the invitation of the British Premier, Gordon Brown.Joy FM’s Israel Laryea who accompanied the president on the visit said officials of Vodafone have welcomed the review and pledged to cooperate.Government has hinted that its decision to look into the contract which was ratified by the previous parliament is to ensure that there were no underhand dealings.Sources close to the presidency have disclosed that government is seeking to maintain the 'original name' of Ghana Telecom while the company runs on the Vadafone brand name.Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu in an earlier interview with Joy FM disclosed that government’s action does not seek to revoke the agreement.“There is nothing untoward about the transaction; they should have no problems at all. It’s not about wanting to undermine the contract but wanting to give Ghanaians the opportunity to satisfy themselves with everything [about the contract]."Vodafone has the opportunity to explain every issue that comes up. I don’t think it is going to be a difficult process,” presidential spokesperson Mahama Ayariga told Israel in London.Meanwhile the External Affairs Director of Vodafone, Matthew Kirk has stated the multinational company is ready to cooperate with the government of Ghana, stressing “we believe in transparency.”Critics have described the review as unnecessary, arguing that it could ward off foreign direct investments.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
