The teaching of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will become compulsory in senior high schools across the country by 2010, Education Minister Alex Tetteh-Enyo has said. ICT will join subjects such as English Language, Integrated Science and Mathematics as core subjects in senior high schools. Although the programme starts with the SHS, Mr Tetteh-Enyo noted that primary and junior high schools would be included at a later date. The first batch of computers has already been shipped in under the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) programme, initiated by the late Finance Minister Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu. The mission of OLPC is to promote learning among children of school-going age in developing countries. The programme which has support from the US government, Microsoft and other donor organisations, seeks to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege. Mr Tetteh-Enyo also disclosed that a foundation which was launched in memory of Mr Baah-Wiredu will be reconstituted. Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
