Fordham University School of Law of New York City has launched its
summer law program to be held at the Ghana Institute of Management and
Public Administration.
The Fordham-Ghana Summer Law Program is the university’s first in
Africa.
It is the only such program in West Africa and one of very few
that any US American Law School is offering on the continent.
The opening ceremony was attended by GIMPA’s Rector, Prof. Yaw Agyemang
Badu as well as by GIMPA’s Dean of the School of Governance, Prof. Kwame
Frimpong.
The Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Georgina Wood, was
guest of honor at the opening ceremony alongside other Justices of the
Supreme Court.
Fordham was represented by the Program’s Director, Prof.
Paolo Galizzi and Faculty members, Prof. Gemma Solimene and Prof. Victor
Essien.
The Program Director, Prof. Paolo Galizzi, and Program Coordinator, Ms
Alena Herklotz of Fordham Law School, explained that Ghana was chosen to
host the program because of its political stability and welcoming
environment.
Under the program, US law students will attend classes in international human rights law, multinational corporations law, comparative constitutional law and international and comparative immigration and refugee law.
Ten Ghanaian students have also been offered
scholarships to attend the program and share this experience with their US counterparts. Lectures will be taught by US and Ghanaian professors.
As part of the program, students will visit legal institutions and tourist destinations in the country. The program will last for a month.
