Government says it is approaching the fight against Covid-19 in a manner that will not affect the economic activities of the citizenry.

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said it is imperative that businesses are provided with a conducive environment to thrive in order to make a living amid the pandemic.

“One of the main things we need to do is to ensure that in tackling the substantive health crisis, we don’t disrupt economic activity so much,” he said, Friday.

It has been two weeks since President Akufo-Addo lifted the lockdown imposed on Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.

The three-week restriction of all movement resulting took a toll on businesses leading to a slowdown in trading and other economic activities.

The President explained that the reversal of the lockdown was based on data and science coupled with the assessment of various sectors of the economy.

The move was heavily criticised with many people describing it as immature because the country's Covid-19 cases were still increasing despite the lockdown.

Speaking ahead of a virtual May Day celebration at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra, Mr Oppong Nkrumah explained that the informal nature of most businesses across the country meant that the burden on livelihoods would worsen if the lockdown was not lifted.

“If you are not careful and you grind everything to a halt, you may have more people suffering from the economic consequences and may even be dying from the economic consequences than the Covid-19 risk itself,” the Information Minister reiterated.

He said this country-specific response would ensure that the pandemic does not affect the economic gains made by Ghanaians under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
