Eleven students of a school in Mäntsälä in southern Finland had to be quarantined after exposure to COVID-19 when schools in the country reopened on May 14, reported news agency Xinhua quoting national broadcaster Yle on Tuesday.
The quarantine was ordered after a member of the teaching staff at the comprehensive school tested positive for the disease, according to the Keski-Uusimaa Joint Municipal Authority (Keusote).
The local health authority said that that infected person was in a good condition and receiving care at home. Keusote's health officials said they would contact the quarantined students as soon as possible.
To date, five cases of COVID-19 infection have been confirmed among students or school staff since most of the primary and lower secondary schools in the country reopened last Thursday.
Last weekend, 17 students and four teachers at a school in Porvoo were quarantined after one student tested positive for COVID-19, and a significant part of the staff at a school in Sipoo had to be quarantined after coming into contact with an infected individual. Porvoo and Sipoo are both in southern Finland.
On Monday, two COVID-19 infections have been found in two comprehensive schools in Helsinki, prompting a decision to quarantine dozens of teachers and students.
The Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare said that as of Tuesday afternoon, Finland has confirmed 6,399 COVID-19 infections, of which 19 were new. The death toll has reached 301, one more than on the previous day. According to a preliminary estimate, at least 5,000 people have recovered.
