With more private and corporate organisations contributing to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, a 95-year-old World War Two veteran says he will not be left out.
Private Joseph Hammond, who has challenged himself to walk two miles a day for a week as a means of raising funds for frontline health workers say he was inspired by UK's Captain Tom Moore.
"I am really enjoying myself. But I want to take this opportunity to appeal to everyone, rich and poor in Ghana to contribute massively to enable our team that is the doctors and nurses; buy the clothes that they need to address this issue and kick coronavirus out of Africa," he said.
On April 5, 2020, President Akufo-Addo as part of the government’s enhanced response to combat the spread of Covid-19 exempted health workers from paying taxes for three months.
Furthermore, all frontline health workers will receive an additional allowance of fifty percent (50%) of their basic salary per month, i.e. for March, April, May and June,” he said in a televised address.
The President also established a National Covid-19 Trust Fund headed by former Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo.
In addition to this, government was to ensure that all health workers especially those at the front line are constantly supplied with PPEs to protect themselves and work effectively.
While, there have been a few challenges with reports of PPEs being stolen or some health facilities not being adequately equipped, organisations like the Covid-19 National Trust Fund continue to supply these essential items from donations received.
To support this course, Private Joseph Hammond who started his walk from Osu on Tuesday, May 19, said all monies raised will be used to purchase more PPEs for Covid-19 frontline workers and veterans in Commonwealth countries affected by the pandemic.
