The Deputy Campaign Manager of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise a mop up of the soon to end voter's registration exercise once the borders of the country are open.
Alex Segbefia said this is to prevent Ghanaians abroad who could not partake in the exercise due to Covid-19 and the closure of borders from being disenfranchised.
"We are hoping that the EC will contemplate doing a further mop up once the borders are open. At the end of the day, it should be more inclusive and less exclusive," he said on JoyFM's Super Morning Show.
The Electoral Commission is completing the voters' registration exercise it started in July on Thursday, August 6.
The Commission said the exercise was to provide a new "credible voters register" for the country.
After what it describes as a successful exercise, the EC says many Ghanaians registered during the six-phased period, however, it will organise a mop up of the exercise over the weekend to offer persons who are yet to have their names captured the opportunity to do so.
The country's border remains closed [since March] as part of measures to mitigate the effects of Covid-19.
Government has indicated that the move is to prevent the importation of more Covid-19 cases into the country.
Nonetheless, Mr. Segbefia says Ghanaians still abroad due to the closure of the borders must not be denied the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections.
He, therefore, has urged the Electoral Commission to organise a mop up for such persons.
"There are a number of Ghanains on both sides of the political divide who are stuck in different countries through no fault of theirs and they should also not be disenfranchised.
"So once the borders are open, there should be another mop up process for such persons to be able to come and register," he added.
