Founder of Perez Chapel International, Charles Agyinasare has highlighted six cues that parents should adopt to bring up their children in line with the teachings of the Lord.
Delivering his Sunday Sermon, Bishop Agyinasare cited Proverbs 22:6 saying, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
The then listed these six tips that can positively impact lives of children when introduced to them early.
1. Introduce Children to God and the Church Early
Another way to teach your children about God is to take them to Church early in life. You must also introduce them to Christ through teaching and admonishing. You also teach them to come to Church by being regular in Church yourself.
If you come to Church and leave your children at home, you are not teaching them to be in Church. Some things will be better taught to your children in Church so you must take them to Church. Teach them to have personal devotion (pray and study the Word) – in my house Mummy does that. Encourage them to fast and pray
2. Don’t Keep Changing Church Frequently
There must also be consistency in the Church you belong to. Abrupt changes in environment do have a drastic impact on children. If this becomes too frequent it can hamper the proper development of the child. You must not keep moving from one Church to the other in search of so called power or anointing.
You must be stable in one Church as long as possible. You also don’t keep changing friends and relationships too frequently. If you keep doing so, you will not be helping your children learn the virtue of sticking and being focused. Let your children know they inherited a great name and legacy from you. They must be taught not to desecrate or destroy that name.
3. Meet your child's monetary needs.
It is very important to correctly assess the monetary needs of your child and fulfill them. Your perspective of needs may be too conservative; their perspective may be too liberal in relation to actual needs. A middle of the road approach is needed, a compromise acceptable to both. Shortage of money may lead the child to make bad decisions on how to acquire money or possessions. An excess reinforces unwelcome spending habits.
A child should habitually make a realistic budget and periodically review spending with an eye to conforming to their budget. Teach them the judicial use of money. Teach them not to be hasty to get rich Proverbs 28:20; “A faithful man will abound with blessings, But he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.”
Today they see these stars get “overnight money” they want to get it. Not many people easily get rich like that. Mostly, it takes sacrifice, hard work, wise planning, patient endurance and more hard work. Discuss with them the process of becoming successful not by sudden flight.
4. Have a discussion about their infatuations and relationships:
This is an age the children are infatuated with members of the opposite sex. There is nothing wrong about that. Always be supportive of your children, even if their choice of friends may upset you. Experimentation of a plutonic relationship at this age is normal, perfectly normal. The parents need not get alarmed so long as the relationship stays within decent limits.
With the passage of time the infatuation subsides and the child is back to normal. Always be attentive, especially when you suspect an unhealthy relationship. Be supportive of your child and make sure that they can always feel comfortable asking for advice. Learn to have fun with them – When Azonto came you should learn to dance with them, Jerusalema dancing
5. Deal with their habits and vices.
Smoking and drinking are considered vices by some families and habits by others. However, it must be a no go area for your children. It is better to talk about these behaviors with your children.
Tell them about your own experiences. Let them know that they don't need to start unhealthy behaviors just because their friends do. Talk to them about the long-term health effects of smoking and let them know that their decision to smoke is an unwise lifestyle choice.
6. Be a Facebook/Social Media contact of your child:
This will help you keep in touch with your child's daily activities. Participate in the discussion with their friends. Give a friendly poke wherever you feel you need to correct the direction. They will not mind it.
