The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has asked the Ghana Police Service to make public a report on the outcome of violent incidents recorded during the voter registration exercise.

CODEO says making this report public is necessary to reinforce the confidence of Ghanaians in security agencies in the country.

“The Coalition reiterates its call on the security agencies to take appropriate action against all perpetrators of violence,” a report from CODEO stated.

This recommendation forms part of its pre-election environment observation statement for the month of September.

Ahead of the Elections, CODEO has urged security agencies to take the necessary actions against the perpetrators of violence to ensure the country has free, fair and peaceful elections.

In the report, CODEO further condemned the various acts of violence that characterised the registration, urging the Electoral Commission to address all concerns raised during the exercise to prevent similar incidents during the General Elections.

“While observers’ reports indicated a generally peaceful electoral environment, there were a fewn incidents of use of abusive or inflammatory language, destruction or removal of party/candidate paraphernalia, and election-related violence.

“For instance, in the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region, there was an alleged physical attack on the communication officers of one Lawyer Akwasi Amofa, an aspiring independent parliamentary candidate for the constituency,” they said.

“CODEO reminds the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of the need to share updates with the public on the progress of all cases of election-related violence as failure to ensure people are punished for their crimes will further erode public confidence and encourage impunity,” they said.
