Bawku MP Mahama Ayariga has touted the achievements he has chalked, particularly in the education sector since he became a parliamentarian.
Speaking at JoyNews’ Ballot Box Friday, the former Sports Minister said he can take credit for about 70 per cent education-related infrastructure projects undertaken within his constituency.
According to him, he lobbied for more schools to be constructed in the Bawku municipality, therefore, ending the shift system that existed in the constituency when he was first voted into Parliament in 2008.
“It was during my tenure as Deputy Minister for Education that I was able to lobby for so many basic schools to Bawku municipality which enabled us to abolish the shift system here in Bawku.
“Indeed, I brought so many schools to Bawku that, I was reported by GETFund to former President Atta Mills for the number of schools that were allocated to Bawku alone,” he said.
The MP who is seeking another term also noted that, he pushed for a lot of facilities to be developed in the second cycle schools in the area, including the Bawku Secondary Technical School, and the Bawku Senior High School.
“If you knew Bawku Secondary Technical in 2008 and you see Secondary Technical now you will see a major monumental infrastructure investment that took place,” he stressed.
But in a sharp response, the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary candidate for Bawku, Agbanwaa Gabiana Abugri said Mr Ayariga cannot claim he abolished the shift system.
According to her, the shift system was abolished before the Bawku MP was even voted into office.
She also insisted that Mr Ayariga’s claim of contributing 70 per cent of growth in the education sector in the area is false.
She explained that “because of this double track system, we are constructing a lot of building at these senior high schools so if indeed, he has done what he says he did, then I don’t think we will be having double track at all.”
