The Executive Director at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has condemned the former Special Prosecutor for taking logistics into his hands at the time of his appointment.
Prof Henry Kwasi Prempeh said Martin Amidu's action does not speak well of the system of appointment which is characterised by bureaucracy.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, the law professor advised that there is the need for reform.
“There has to be a standard process in place for how the office is set up and so if that is what we are witnessing then it calls for reform.”
“We cannot have this process where the person appointed to run an office then becomes the person going about buying and sorting things out in the office,” he said.
He further stated that the Office of the Special Prosecutor was supposed to take effect at the time of appointment, not a later date as Mr Amidu claims.
“In the operation of the office itself, it was anticipated that if you did not separate the prosecutorial job from the administrative part of the job, you might have a situation where in our culture, you have a person who is given a particular function but spends all their time doing the administrative work,” Prof. Prempeh said.
His comments came after the Special Prosecutor’s resignation from office.
According to Mr Amidu, he resigned because he did not feel that President Nana Akufo-Addo had done enough to safeguard the independence of his office.
He said, "The events of 12/11/20 removed the only protection I had from the threats & plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report & dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately".
In a letter addressed to Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr Amidu demanded the president to find a suitable replacement for him.
