Political analyst Dr Theo Achemapong says presenting a large number of ministers to run the affairs of the country is not needful.
“Monitoring and Evaluation Ministry, I don’t think is needed. It could be merged or fixed with the Presidential delivery unit of the office of the presidency. The Office of the Senior Minister, I personally don’t think that is even required or needed,” he said.
According to him, a substantial number of about 70 to 80 ministers would be sufficient to ensure the efficient running of affairs in Ghana.
“We don’t need 110 ministers in Ghana. The bigger the size of the government, the bigger your institutional capacity and risk. The bigger administrative thefts are likely to come up and we have seen that happen in the last regime,” he stated.
Speaking to Prime Morning host Daniel Dadzie, Thursday, Dr Theo Acheampong called for the eradication and merger of several ministries that have failed to perform during President Akufo-Addo’s first term in office.
“Fisheries, Aquaculture, you don’t need a separate ministry for it. Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development probably can be merged with Local Government under than a substantive ministry. “
Dr Theo Acheampong iterated that the number of ministerial appointments must be cut down especially at a time Ghana is faced with a possible hung Parliament.
“The citizens are telling government ‘you need to reduce the size of your ministers,’” he added.
He urged the Akufo-Addo led administration to ensure that Ministers who are appointed after the vetting process do not shirk their responsibilities.
“You need to give them a much sharper focus and mandate. You need to task them to be actually up and doing.”
