The immediate past Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak says President Akufo-Addo should exclude restriction of movements in the country as part of measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
In an open letter to the President ahead of the 22nd national address on Sunday, the politician acknowledged that although the country is witnessing a new surge in the disease several citizens will not survive a second lockdown.
“Majority of our countrymen and women cannot afford to live under a lockdown again. It will increase crime and destroy our society than the virus would.
“Some category of Ghanaians can afford to survive a lockdown, but many of our people up and down the country cannot,” he emphasised.
For the former legislator, instead of a lockdown, government and relevant stakeholders should focus on prevention by increasing public education and enforcing laws on the wearing of nose masks and other health safety protocols.
He noted that due to the flaws in the country’s systems, preventive measures will avert pushing our structures “to the brink of collapse”.
To further augment his argument, the former MP cited findings of research by health scientists indicating that lockdown policies are “producing devastating effects” on people particularly, the youth populations “on short and long-term public health.”
“We are in this together, Mr President. The virus does not know colour, class or creed. I implore my fellow Ghanaians to heed the calls to protect themselves, their loved ones and other fellow Ghanaians.”
