Health facilities in the Northern Region say the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the supply of Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine for pregnant women.
Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine is a drug used for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy.
In a report by JoyNews' Regional Correspondent Martina Bugri, the global supply chain is said to have shut down temporarily, thereby affecting the supply of the S-P medication.
Speaking to JoyNews after the regional annual performance review, Deputy Public Health Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Hilarious Abewu intimated that most district hospitals could not undertake the treatment.
A few hospitals that worked with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), according to him, have access to the drugs.
Despite the shortcomings, the Regional Public Health Director disclosed that pregnant women who after several testing, confirm positive for malaria received regular treatment.
Also, although the region has had challenges in the treatment of malaria, he indicated that no deaths have been recorded for the past year.
