Ghana has been chosen by the international community to serve as a case study for neighboring countries on safeguarding the use of online services to the benefit of all.
To this end, the country has been sharing experience of some cybersecurity activities and initiatives to the world at the Freedom Online Coalition event in Accra hosted by the National Cybersecurity Centre.
The Freedom Online Coalition event afforded Ghana the platform to explain some initiatives undertaken to safeguard the country’s digital space and also protect the human rights of online users and businesses.
This is part of a four priority areas by the freedom online coalition to strengthen governmental engagements in combating cyber fraud.
National Cybersecurity Advisor, Albert Antwi Boasiako told Joy Business that Ghana continues to lead in the West African sub region when it comes to online safety practices.
“Ghana is playing a critical role of being used as a case study due to the significant success stories we have as a country when it comes to securing our digital space.”
“We are sharing the experiences we have with the rest of Africa and the world as a whole with regards to the National Cybersecurity Centre, the promulgation of the new cybersecurity act and other known activities aimed at creating awareness on cyber security” he said.
Ambassador Jyrki Pulkkinen, Finnish Ambassador to Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, and the ECOWAS, representing the current Government of Finland which Chairs the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) and the German Ambassador to Ghana Christoph Retzlaff, pledged their support to the cybersecurity enhancement of the country.
The Cybersecurity Advisor also applauded the work of Germany and other European countries for the support of the work of the coalition.
“Even though the governments of Ghana and Germany did not envisage the COVID-19 and its potential impact on digital inequalities, the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare, the significance of the digital inclusion statement in addressing digital inequalities, affecting about 3.6 billion individuals globally” he added.
Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu Ekuful hinted that plans are underway to implement the Cybersecurity Fund with the Ministry of Finance.
