MP for South Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has refuted claims that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has rejected his urgent question on the travel expenses of President Akufo-Addo.

Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa, had earlier accused the President of ostentatious spending even as the country goes through economic hardships.

He indicated that, per his findings and calculations, the President spent £345,000, i.e. GH¢2,828,432.80 at the current exchange rate in flight cost during his nine-day visit to France, Belgium and South Africa.

Rumour has it that the request for a probe into the President's travel had been rejected.

In a Facebook post, Mr Ablakwa asked the general public to, "disregard and treat with contempt, the fake news in circulation claiming that the Rt. Hon. Speaker has rejected my urgent questions to the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Finance on the state of the presidential jet and the total cost (including all incidentals) of President Akufo-Addo’s recent profligate luxury travels to France, Belgium and South Africa respectively."

He expressed confidence in the Speaker to diligently deal with the matter.

"It goes without saying that I have confidence in the venerable Speaker Bagbin to wisely exercise his sole discretionary authority of admissibility under Order 66 (1) of Parliament’s Standing Orders, particularly, when the two crucial questions in issue are of great public interest and are at the heart of financial accountability which is a cardinal constitutional mandate of the legislature.

"It is also worthy of note that my questions do not flout any of the conditions of admissibility of questions under Order 67. How befuddling that those who accuse me of engaging in unfounded propaganda are in the same breath so morbidly apprehensive in taking advantage of the appropriate forum my questions provide to expose that unfounded propaganda they speak of, and forever have me discredited on this infamous £15,000 an hour luxury jet affair- very strange indeed," he said.
