The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey has revealed that scrap dealers at Agbogloshie market, rejected an amount of GH¢50,000 from the government as compensation.
The money was meant to cater for the cost of carting their goods to Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality. But the scrap dealers rejected the offer because they are opposed to being relocated.
Mr Henry Quartey revealed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Morning Show, Dwaso Nsem, Friday.
The Regional Minister said this in reaction to allegations by the scrap dealers to the effect, that they were not engaged ahead of the exercise, hence could not make an informed decision.
However, Mr Quartey said his outfit "engaged the people extensively", yet the leadership of the scrap dealers rejected the offer insisting that moving to Adjen Kokoku will affect their business.
"We started engagements three weeks ago, I made the MCE for Ablekuma Central and four to five other persons, speak with the traders.
"All persons trading in meat are gone along with all the other traders, how come the scrap dealers claim they had no knowledge of the relocation exercise?" he said surprised.
He admitted that there was initial resistance, but was impressed that the traders adhered to the directive.
The Regional Minister reiterated his position that no one will be allowed to return to the place, after attempts in the past two decades to get them relocated, had failed.
"You know, when I started this thing, everybody said it cannot happen. But please read my lips, no one is coming back here. It is done”, he maintained.
The decongestion of the Agbogbloshie market is part of the Minister’s ‘Let's Make Accra Work' agenda.
