Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that persons who have been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus stand a higher chance of not being hospitalised.
In an interview with JoyBusiness’ George Wiafe, Director-General, Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye explained current data from the GHS shows that none of the persons who received the AstraZeneca vaccines has been hospitalised since the recent surge in Ghana.
“Our data currently shows that we have not hospitalized anybody who has been vaccinated, all those who are currently being hospitalized have not been vaccinated. This means that the vaccine is helping,” he said.
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is, however, warning that Intensive Care Units in Accra’s major hospitals are being overstretched as a result of the rising covid-19 cases.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Monday, General Secretary of GMA, Dr Justice Yankson explained, our hospitals are not equipped enough to handle the fast-rising cases, as he claims the country is nearing a possible third wave.
“In terms of the available beds, available equipment, oxygen tanks what have you we don’t have enough, and as it stands now most of the critical care areas are also flooded with covid-19 patients.”
As of 8th July 2021, 23 persons have severe conditions with the situation of 11 patients described as critical. Between the 4th and 8th of July however, active cases moved from 1,849 to 2,247, indicating a 398 increment. Currently, the Ridge Hospital which has a total of 16 ICU beds already has 8 beds occupied.
