Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has refuted allegations of being against the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian family values, Bill 2021.
In an opinion piece published on Myjoyonline.com, Francis-Xavier Sosu stated that he has been misunderstood by scores of Ghanaians, following a comment he made in an interview on the anti-gay bill that is currently before Parliament.
When asked about his views on the 36-page anti-LGBTQI+ bill, the human rights lawyer stated that the passage of the bill into law, will have international consequences for Ghana.
“Don’t forget already, the sentiments and the kind of emotions associated with legislating against this practice is very high. It has very serious international consequences. I daresay that Ghana will definitely lose some benefits as a result of passing this law.”
His comment received lots of backlash. Taking to his Facebook page, a former MP for Kumbumgu, Ras Mubarak noted that the Legislator is courageous but foolishly courageous.
He said the Madina MP, must recognize that his constituents who voted for him are against LGBT rights.
However, clarifying his stance, Francis Xavier Sosu stated emphatically that he will never be an advocate for gay rights although he has been a leading Human Rights advocate.
"For the avoidance of doubt, I am not against the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, Bill 2021 and I am not and will never be an advocate for gay rights although I have been a leading Human Rights advocate for over 10years and counting."
According to him, as a human rights activist, he received an invitation to advocate for gay rights but turned it down for moral reasons.
He added that homosexuality is not a fundamental human right.
"My personal beliefs as a Christian are against that position and the collective aspirations of the people I represent as a Member of Parliament are against this position as well. I believe in the position that, there is no human rights in homosexuality or lesbianism and all its variances now collectively known as LGBTQ+.
"The Bill is a bold attempt to bring sanity in that space and bring finality to the debate. I am for and would support the bill because at this time in history our society is unanimous and united on the need to proscribe the conduct and activities of LGBTQ+," he added.
