A police officer on duty at the Neoplan station on Wednesday escaped a mob attack while he was allegedly pursuing a rider on an unregistered motorbike at about 12:30 pm.
In a statement by the police, it said the attack was after the rider got involved in an accident while he was being pursued by the officer on the Achimota-Ofankor highway in Accra.
Unfortunately, the rider who had refused to stop when the police signalled him to do so at the Neoplan station near Achimota, accidentally rolled under a JAC truck, losing his life.
The police officer who was subsequently attacked by a mob, sustained some injuries before a timely rescued.
The two were rushed to the Achimota Hospital for medical attention, but a police statement said, "the motor rider was pronounced dead on arrival.”
According to the statement, “some aggrieved youth numbering about 150 later besieged the Achimota Hospital in an attempt to attack both the hospital staff and the policemen.”
“They pelted stones and other implements, damaging the back screens of two police vehicles and other property around. Reinforcement was requested to augment police efforts, disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control,” police source indicated.
Meanwhile, the officer is still receiving treatment at the hospital while the incident that led to the death of the rider is under investigation.
