The Principal of Al-Afaruq College of Education (AFCOE) in Wenchi in the Bono Region, Sualihu Wahab, has suggested to the National Teaching Council (NTC) to give trained teachers two years ample time to prepare for their licensure examination.
This, according to him, will prevent the mass failure of candidates who will take the new teacher’s licensure exams across the country.
Mr. Wahab gave the recommendation during a mentorship training workshop organized by AFCOE for headmasters, basic school teachers and circuit supervisors.
The mentorship training workshop was to re-orient the teachers on their role as mentors for teacher trainees from the college in the Wenchi Municipality.

The Principal of AFCOE said writing the teacher’s licensure examination right after college will defeat the purpose for instituting the examination.
“As an educationist, I will recommend that teacher trainees are given much time to receive a form of practical training before sitting for the licensure examination. This will prevent the high failure rate,” Mr Wahab stressed.
Available statistics indicates that 27,171 out of 34,724 candidates who sat for the licensure examination this year representing 78.2% passed the examination whilst 7,553 representing 21.8% failed.
In all, 250 basic school teachers, 37 headmasters as well as 5 circuit supervisors from the Wenchi Municipality benefited from the mentorship training workshop.
