A lot happened this week; from the effects of tidal wave on residents in Keta, public hearing of Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, former President John Dramani Mahama’s view of the economy and Shatta Wale apologizes to the IGP.
On Sunday, November 7, 2021, over 4000 residents in the Ketu Municipality were displaced and several others were left in despair when they woke up to their homes and properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis being washed away by tidal waves.
Communities such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope, and Keta Central were largely affected to the extent that residents had nothing to salvage.
In Anloga, residents of Dzita, Agbledomi, Atiteti, Agokedzi, and Fuveme were also displaced by the fierce tidal waves that swept through the communities during the wee hours of Sunday.
Residents are appealing to the general public for support. In the wake of this, a photo used by the Majority Caucus in Parliament on the issue of tidal waves, which has devasted communities in the Volta Region, nearly started a fight between the two sides at a press conference on Friday.
Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin showed alleged photos from the scene of the disaster to the press. This was to back his assertions that, the tidal waves that had ravaged communities such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope, and Keta Central in the Volta Region are due to sand winning.
But former Energy Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah and South Dayi MP, Rockson Nelson Dafiamekpor started heckling him.
According to them, his claim that the picture depicts the current state of the Keta coastal area and was taken at the scene was untrue. Fact checks have confirmed that the photos are indeed from Sierra Leone and not Keta. Well, there's more in the wrap.
Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, began the first of a series of public hearings on the Private Members bill on Thursday.
The sitting saw eminent personalities from the Coalition of Lawyers, Academics, and other Professionals, Parliament, as well as the Human Rights Coalition presenting their arguments on why the Bill should be passed or rejected.
Also, Former President John Dramani Mahama addressed the nation at the Kempinski hotel to end his tour of the 16 regions, the 2020 NDC flagbearer expressed worry over the current state of Ghana’s economy.
According to him, the government’s poor and reckless management of the economy is due to overspending on the 2020 elections and not the effects of the pandemic.
Finally, dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, was on Wednesday morning made to apologise to the IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, for disrupting an ongoing meeting with players in the creative industry. Hannah Odame has the wrap.
