The Tamale Magistrate Court has denied bail for the headmaster of St. Charles Liwanga R/C JHS, whose students died on their return from working on his farm.
Judge Amadu Issifu, who presided over the case on Monday, November 15, failed to grant the accused's legal counsel, Emmanuel Jashain, bail despite their request.
According to JoyNews Correspondent, Martina Bugri who was in court today, lawyers for the accused made their plea due to inconclusive investigations.
Mr Jashain, charged with manslaughter, has been remanded into custody is scheduled to reappear before the court on November 29, 2021.
On November 12, it was reported that seven students of the St. Charles Liwanga Junior High School in the Saboba District of the Northern Region had died after one of the two canoes they were cruising in capsized in the Oti River.
The students numbering 31 were returning from their headteacher’s farm at Butuin, a community in the overseas area, when the disaster happened.
After a search party concluded its search, the death toll jumped to nine.
Saboba District Police Commander ASP Shine Zoiku, who confirmed the incident, told JoyNews the search party was able to rescue 21 survivors.
A day after the incident, Mr Jashain turned himself in to the police. Investigations pertaining to the incident have begun.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Saboba District, Bingrini George, has indicated that the District Security Committee is set to meet with the Ghana Education Service to discuss the canoe disaster that claimed the lives of nine students of the St Charles Liwanga R/C Junior High school in the Saboba District of the Northern Region.
The DCE said top among issues to be discussed include sanctions on teachers in the district who use their students as farmhands and possible seizure of their licences.
He said DISEC will also pursue the matter to ensure the headteacher is prosecuted.
