First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has commissioned the Women Empowerment Centre at Tefle in the Volta Region.
This initiative, which is spearheaded by the Network of Women Growth in Ghana (NEWIG), was established in January 2022 to equip women in entrepreneurial and vocational skills.
According to Mrs. Akufo-Addo, the development of many countries have stalled because women have been placed at a disadvantaged position in terms of education and economic emancipation.
"This has negatively impacted the development of many countries as women make up a significant percentage of the global population. That is why I fully endorse the chosen mission of NEWIG to support women organisations for full autonomy over their lives."
"Over 7,000 women have been trained under NEWIG across the country and over 70% of these beneficiaries are running their own business," she revealed.

Founder of NEWIG, Mawusi Nudekor Awity, highlighted the importance of enrolling children in technical and vocational institutions.
The Director General of the Ghana TVET Service said the country can now boast of a free-for-all Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) education.
“Now we have our schools enjoying free TVET and we are going to get a lot of skilful people, artisans, well equipped ones, and we will not be importing but we will be exporting artisans.”

“Now go tell everyone that TVET is free now, send your children to TVET schools so the unemployment challenge will be a thing of the past.”
The Women Empowerment Centre comprises an administration office for staff, three workshop rooms for practical lessons, two lecture rooms, a canteen, an ICT lab, and a Competency Based Training (CBT) office.
Others include a spa, cosmetology classroom, kitchen, pub, restaurant, library, 13 guest rooms, a seminar room and a shop.
