The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has urged the general public to disregard publication on mandatory ‘Akwaaba’ insurance for all international travellers arriving in the country.
An article published by the B&FT online on January 24, 2022, advertised that by the end of the first quarter of 2022, all international travellers arriving in Ghana through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) will be obliged to roll-on to a compulsory insurance cover known as the ‘Akwaaba’ insurance policy.
According to the article, Managing Director of SIC Insurance PLC, Stephen Oduro disclosed to the B&FT that a consortium of three Ghanaian insurance companies – State Insurance Company PLC (SIC), Enterprise Insurance and GLICO Insurance Company – will oversee the implementation of the policy.
“Per provisions of the policy, every traveler coming into the country will be required to purchase the insurance regardless of the duration of stay and nationality,” Stephen Oduro reported to have told the B&FT.
But in a letter on Tuesday, the NIC said it has not approved the ‘Akwaaba’ insurance.
The Commission, therefore, advised the general public to disregard any publication to that effect.
