The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has donated 300 body bags to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), following an urgent request prompted by a surge in road traffic fatalities.

The request came after the MTTD exhausted its stock of body bags due to the alarming increase in road crashes. Between January and July 2025 alone, 1,730 lives have been lost through road accidents, a figure described as both emotionally devastating and economically concerning.

Presenting the donation on behalf of the NIC, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, emphasised that while insurance primarily involves the payment of claims, the industry also plays a critical role in supporting key public institutions. Over the years, the NIC has extended logistical and financial assistance to agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Road Safety Authority, National Health Insurance Authority and the Ghana Ambulance Service to enhance their operational capacity.

Mr. Ohemeng-Baah noted that in 2024, the insurance industry paid out an average of GH¢10 million in claims daily. He stressed the importance of road safety, urging motorists to be more cautious, as a reduction in accidents would not only save lives but also ease the financial burden on insurance providers, enabling greater support for essential public services.

He described the continued rise in road traffic deaths as deeply troubling and called for urgent attention to the situation.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of Administration, COP Dr. David Agyemang Adjem, expressed the Service’s gratitude to the NIC. He encouraged other corporate organisations to emulate the NIC’s gesture and support the Police in delivering critical services to the public.

COP Dr. Adjem also appealed to motorists to drive responsibly, emphasising that careful driving can significantly reduce the needless loss of lives on the nation’s roads.

Also present at the ceremony were DCOP Mr. Gabriel Prince Waabu, Director-General of the MTTD, and other senior officials of the Police Service. The NIC delegation included Mrs. Stella Jonah, Head of Market Strategy and Innovation, and Mr. Mawuli Zogbenu, Head of Public Affairs and Communications.
