Health authorities in the Ashanti Region are hoping to vaccinate at least 400,000 persons as it takes delivery of another consignment of COVID-19 vaccines.  

The Regional Health Directorate has launched a 5-day vaccination campaign starting from Wednesday, February 2 to Sunday, February 6, 2022.

Dubbed "Operation 2.5 million doses in five days", the campaign intends to target at least 20 percent of the 13.2 million unvaccinated population in the country.  

Health authorities intend to vaccinate at least 400,000 people across the 43 districts of the Ashanti region. 

This includes expectant mothers and persons above the age of 15. 

Deputy Ashanti Regional Health Director in charge of Public Health, Dr. Rockson Michael Adjei indicated that some staff have been dispatched for the 5-day vaccination exercise.  

“We have received additional 400,000 doses of the vaccines to what we already have.

“We will ramp up vaccination so people will have access to the vaccines. We’re deploying more staff and logistics. Teams will be moving around to vaccinate people.

“We’ve started a campaign to ensure people get vaccinated. We’ll be giving first, second, and booster doses and also vaccinate pregnant women and persons above 15 years,” he said.

Vaccination in the region was originally met with resistance to conspiracy theories regarding vaccines. 

Dr. Adjei has however indicated recent deployments to various centers have been huge as the region gradually records minimal vaccine hesitancy. 

He allayed fears and assured the public to get vaccinated. 

“Vaccine hesitancy has been recently minimal. All the vaccines we’ve received so far have been ably deployed.

“The hesitancy may exist, but for now it’s apparent because we’ve not had any challenges.

“We’re putting in measures to ensure people are in line with us,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti region has recorded a decline from 410 active cases in the first week of January.

The region has recorded 8 new cases of COVID-19.
