Special Aide to former President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has asserted that President Akufo-Addo has not demonstrated any interest in combating corruption since he took over the reigns of government.
She indicated that despite the numerous promises the President made prior to assuming office, his administration has resorted to using defensive tactics to shield its members who have been fingered in corruption allegations.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari told Prime Morning Host, Emefa Adeti on Thursday that the government has only succeeded in “desecrating” institutional structres “and I say this without fear of contradiction.”
“President Akufo-Addo never came into office to fight corruption; it was never even on his cards. We have had an administration that promised to tighten its belt, to reduce wastes, to protect the public purse [but] I think that, literally, they’ve basically robbed us of the public purse or whatever is left with; as for E-levy, it will not be our solution.”
“Listen to all the tales about corruption and remember what happened with the Office of the Special Prosecutor, I remember how President Akufo-Addo touted the credentials of Martin Amidu; where did that end up? Today we have a new Special Prosecutor, has the conversation around him changed?” she quizzed.
In reference to the recent dismissal of the Ghana Airports Company's Managing Director, the former Deputy Transport Minister underscored that “when you fire and hire Managing Directors as we are currently witnessing, it is a tactic.”
“Machiavelli will tell you [that] when you want people to fear you, when you want to create a certain uncertainty, you shake the space. What do you do? You sack people, you come out very blazingly to defend all sort of things that are even indefencible. Even when kids can see that what you are saying is fake or false, you would defend it because you believe strongly that some people will believe you; maybe, others wouldn’t.”
Ghana’s performance on Corruption Perception Index
Ghana managed to rake 43 points out of 100 in the recent Corruption Perception Index., just like it did the previous year.
According to Transparency International which carried out the study, “Ghana failed to make progress in the fight against corruption in the year 2021 as the score of 43 is the same as the country’s 2020 score.”
Ghana ranked 73 out of 180 countries/territories on the Index and 9th in Sub-Saharan Africa.
