Today's edition of JoyNews' Newsfile took another critical look at the recent coup d'etats that have hit some countries on the African continent.
For ECOWAS Chair, President Akufo-Addo, the phenomenon of coup d’etats have not advanced the cause of Africa but crippled the progress it had anticipated to achieve.
In Ghana, #FixTheCountry Movement convener, Oliver-Barker Vormawor, and NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Abronye DC, were arrested for coup related matters. Recently, Dean of the University of Ghana’s Law Faculty, Prof Raymond Atuguba warned that “a big part of why certain coups succeed and others fail is the economy.”
According to some, Prof Atuguba should be invited by the Police. But former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Obed Asamoah, says mere speeches about coup d’etat are not enough to trigger the arrest of Ghanaians found in the fray.
Host, Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panellists delved into the factors fostering coups and the need to relook the current democratic system.
Also, the show focused on the high cost of living in the country.
In less than two weeks, the prices of diesel and petrol have increased and are selling at ¢8.29 at the pumps. Due to this, commercial drivers have adjusted transport fares upwards by 15 per cent.
